Under the general supervision of the Cal-SOAP Field Advisor and Project Director, and under the immediate supervision of a school site staff person, Cal-SOAP College Advisors/Academic Tutors will assist high school academic and guidance programs by providing individual and small group college advising and tutorial sessions to local and rural high school students. College Advisors/Academic Tutors provide tutorial services to students in a variety of academic subject areas and help students plan for higher education. They do not recruit for any particular institution.

College Advisors/Academic Tutors

Hours:  Part-time, up to 20 hours per week
Pay:  $10/hour to start
Mileage reimbursement:  50.5¢ per mile (for locations outside of Bakersfield)

Duties:

  • Motivate students to consider postsecondary educational opportunities and to continue in a college preparatory course of study throughout high school.
  • Provide academic support via tutorial assistance to students primarily in grades 9-12.
  • Help find information for students on colleges of interest.
  • Help students complete college and financial aid applications.
  • Follow-up on admission and financial aid applications with students.
  • Discuss educational opportunities and student's academic achievement with parents and/or teachers.
  • Discuss the nature of the collegiate experience with students and encourage high academic achievement.
  • Perform other duties, within the above framework, as assigned by Site Coordinator.
  • Keep accurate data and records of students who have received Cal-SOAP services.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform duties in a responsible, mature manner.
  • Maintain weekly schedule at assigned high school site.
  • Attend all Cal-SOAP training sessions, meetings and events.
  • Report to the school site in accordance with the established hours of work, which are agreed upon with the Cal-SOAP Field Advisor and school site coordinator.
  • Arrive on time to training sessions, meetings and school sites.
  • Keep updated, organized, and accurate records of student contacts and progress in accordance with Cal-SOAP instructions.
  • Report absences in a prescribed manner.
  • Attend parent and college informational nights at school site.
  • Cooperate fully with site coordinators, teachers and administrators.
  • Timely submit contact records, data and timesheets.

Requirements:

  • Provide positive higher education guidance and support for high school students and their parents.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain weekly schedule at assigned site.
  • Ability to interact and relate to students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong data and recordkeeping skills.
  • Demonstate ability to tutor in English and/or Mathematics and other areas of academic study.

Locations:

  • Cal-SOAP high school service sites are located throughout Kern County:  Arvin High, Cuyama Valley High, Frazier Mtn. High, Foothill High, Kern Valley High, Maricopa High, Rosamond High, Shafter High, Taft Union High, Tehachapi High, Trona High and West High.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled and attending college full-time, and be in good academic standing.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License.
  • Must have personal or available transportation with auto insurance coverage.

Background clearance:

  • Prior to the first day of employment, you must pass a background check.  TB test results and fingerprint clearance are mandatory requirements.
