Using Videos and Instructional Programming in Teaching
Teachers who are developing teaching units or are integrating media into a lesson that correlates to state standards should begin by doing a key word search.
Video is the most user friendly technology available to teachers. The teacher should make choices for ordering based on matching video topic, grade level and state standard. A teacher will then order the videos which seem to be correctly matched to his or her needs either online or by fax (661) 852-5847 or by filling out the order forms found at their schools. If they have ordering questions they should call (661) 852-5846.
Teachers often select the videos they think are appropriate for their lesson and begin by showing the entire video to the students. While the students are viewing the video the teacher might want to determine which segments to incorporate into the lesson. Using a Post It the teacher could write down the sentences which would start the selected segments.
A video clip offers a chance to further review with students and provides them with information in various subject areas. Sometimes a video or taped TV program offers students a chance to visit a period of time or a destination which could not be brought into the classroom in any other way. Video is very useful for history instruction because through video we can give students a realistic view of what actually happened during another period of time.
By taping a show the teacher has a chance to show the lesson or parts of the lesson in the manner most suitable for his or her class. The teacher can stop or start a tape at will which is impossible when using broadcast television.
Many schools have a cable drop for Cox Communications or Bright House going into their library. Usually library media clerks do tape specified instructional television programs for teachers. Sometimes the total content of the TV programs listed in our TV schedule needs further clarification. Should teachers need further information on the programming content or advice on programs which integrate well with specified content areas they should call either Laurie Maclin Coordinator of Instructional Media or Cyndi Crawford ITV Ops Tech III at (661) 636 - 4763 / 4547.
