JUNE 2002 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NEWSLETTER

Planning high-quality professional development programs is a challenge that all schools and districts face. Many excellent resources for professional development planning are available online, and are included in this edition of the Professional Development Newsletter. All of the resources below provide information and guidance on professional development planning; many are comprehensive resource kits that include multiple planning tools, and descriptions of effective practices. These resources can help schools create high-quality professional development plans that enhance professional learning.

1. DESIGNS FOR LEARNING
=============================

“Designs for Learning” is a research-based system for planning and implementing professional development. Developed as part of the California Professional Development Reform Initiative, “Designs for Learning” is a joint venture of the California Department of Education, the California Professional Development Consortia, Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning, and the California Staff Development Council. “Designs for Learning” leads educators away from "one-shot" inservice training toward a deeper, more comprehensive approach that leads to improvement in teaching and student learning. 2. LEARNING FROM THE BEST
=============================

“Professional Development: Learning From the Best” is a toolkit for schools and districts based on the National Awards Program for Model Professional Development published by the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory. This toolkit provides resources and planning tools for designing, implementing, evaluating and improving professional development. 3. ACHIEVING YOUR VISION OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
=============================

“Achieving Your Vision of Professional Development: How to Assess Your Needs and Get What You Want” is a "how-to" document that provides resources for building an effective professional development system. Developing a vision, creating a context for change, planning, investing resources, providing ongoing assistance, and assessing and monitoring progress are all addressed. Winning programs from the 1999 National Awards Program for Model Professional Development sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education are featured. 4. THE KNOWLEDGE LOOM
=============================

“Using the Knowledge Loom: Ideas and Tolls for Collaborative Professional Development” is a resource for beginning a collaborative professional development process. This guidebook uses The Knowledge Loom: What Works in Teaching and Learning Web site as a content resource. Resources are included on selecting a professional development theme, reviewing best practices, analyzing success stories, identifying support resources, and action planning. 5. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTION PLANNER

7. TECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

“Professional Development: A Link to Better Learning” includes a variety of resources, including principles and resources that can assist schools to design and implement their own plans for effective technology professional development. 8. TEACHER RECRUITMENT CENTERS
=============================

Six Teacher Recruitment Centers throughout California provide assistance to school districts in seeking, screening, referring, and supporting potential new teachers. Districts seeking new teachers and teachers looking for employment are encouraged to contact their Teacher Recruitment Center.
